At the mall we were asked; could one world exist without the other? One maintains the other, there is a connection between America and India, the America’s poor is in India. The rich need the poor to work; what would happen if the wage was increased for the poor? There would be less dispensable income for the rich.
Discussion/Debrief in the afternoon (Social Analysis):
3rd trip to Bangalore – what we saw today, we didn’t see on the first 2 trips; the slum/urban poor community and the mall.
· Survival economy
· Gap between the classes in Indian society. We didn’t see people in the well off areas, there were no people around compared to the slum area where it was open with lots of people about.
· Different religions live side by side, doesn’t matter to them, survival is common to them all.
· Animals all around in the slum area compared to the Mall and well off areas.
· Kinds of work the people in the slums were doing; making furniture, recycling, vendors, laundry.
· Cart work Rs500 to buy it all, if sold all the produce would have Rs200 profit!
Connection between today’s visit and lecture:
· Hospitality – the people in the slums showed their hospitality.
Connection between the slums and the mall:
· Looked like 2 different worlds
· People working would be from the slums
· Well off people wouldn’t go to the slum but the people from the slums would leave to do work
· Well off people “need their labour” – can’t live without it!
Why did we go to the slum? What did you learn?
· Learn about their life
· Surprised between Rs30 – 50% use this, learnt how to survive off a little
· Humbling because people in England wouldn’t live that way, a little bit of guilt.
· Feelings – conflicting feelings, anger at the way they live and comforting to see the sense of community that they have.
· Max’s thought on Rs30 – we eat food for enjoyments vs eating food for survival. We always have choice around food we eat, if we had to eat for survival this would be different.
Do you have choices in Life?
The luxury of choice
Social Analysis:
Take the whole (society) and break it down (talking as a whole is too big). Can’t say Indian Society as there are different aspect to it.
For social analysis to take place:
1. Break it up
2. Examine each aspect
3. How they are related/linked to each other?
4. Who is benefiting?
5. Who is left out? Excluded? Why are they left out?
Social analyisis ends here.
Justpeace goes one step further – what can we do about it? Need to go deeper in to understand how to be an activist for peace.
To what extent can the government control our lives? Keep asking questions!
Consumerism
· Ism = I love
· Making people want to buy
· Capitalism needs consumerism
· Buy things that we don’t need
Small Group discussions – spend 1 hour on:
· What groups in your country are the poor? What percent of the population are they?
· How much do they earn per day/per month?
· How do they spend their money?
· Who are the rich? What percent of the population are they? How much do they earn?
· What is the relationship between the rich and the poor?
· Have you spent time with the poor? Why do they do what they do?
· What makes people buy things?
· A question that will be asked throughout the 3 months: So what? What are you going to do about it? ACTION!
